Osnabrück 1893. The coal mining industry developed into one of the most important sources of income for the city of Osnabrück at the end of the 18th century. In addition to the Hase shaft, there was another shaft facility in the north of Piesberg - the Stüve shaft. The coals mined there were transported underground, through the 1.5 kilometer long Hase tunnel, with horses to the mine railway station located to the south. At an extraordinary general meeting on July 27, 1889, approval was given for the purchase of the Piesberg mine. With the completion of the purchase agreement on August 22, 1889, the mine, along with all rights and obligations, was transferred to the Georgs-Marien-Bergwerks- and Hüttenverein. Under General Director August Haarmann, young miners set off in September 1893 to find new anthracite coal and bring the black gold to the surface.
