1893: Augustin Rothmayer is gravedigger at the famous Vienna Central Cemetery. A quirky but highly educated oddball who writes the first gravedigger's almanac. His peace is suddenly disturbed when he receives a visit from the young Inspector Leopold von Herzfeldt. Herzfeldt needs a death expert: Several maids were murdered, each brutally impaled. The gravedigger has seen corpses in every form, knows all the causes of death and stages of decomposition. He knows that staking is an ancient method of keeping undead underground. Is there a superstitious serial killer going around in Vienna? The inspector and the gravedigger start investigating together and have to realize that deep chasms open up behind the gates of this glamorous cosmopolitan city
