The Doll Collector

Dolls have always played a major role in Ferdinand’s life. Even as a child he played with them nonstop. It wasn’t only playing that brought him joy, but also maintaining and caring for his favorites. To many people Ferdinand seemed very peculiar. Sadly, he had no friends. Ostracized by society, he was always considered an outsider. One day he was offered a unique opportunity to turn his hobby into a profession. Ferdinand received an offer to take over a workshop repairing broken dolls. Naturally, he didn’t have to think long about it. With great zeal he embraced the new challenge. It didn’t take long before Ferdinand built up his own clientele. Suddenly a woman entered his workshop. “Good day,” she said. “This is my little Katharina — she fell while I was cleaning. She is my everything, please tell me the damage can still be fixed.” Ferdinand took the doll from the woman and examined the destruction. “Yes, come back in a week,” he murmured. After the agreed seven days the woman knocked on the workshop door. No one opened. At first she thought Ferdinand had forgotten the pickup appointment. But when he didn’t answer his phone either she grew suspicious. She went back to the workshop. There was no sign of Ferdinand anywhere, but the door was open, so the customer stepped inside.
