KIEL IN 1926 The young Marie Katharina Wittkowski dreams of finally being able to emigrate to her relative in America. To earn enough money, she takes a position as a maid with the renowned neurologist Dr. Siegfried Winter. The diligent girl settles in well with the friendly, but shy doctor, who is still suffering from the death of his mother. She regularly writes to her aunt in New Orleans that she can't wait to finally be with her again. A GIRL DISAPPEARS Then, however, the letters stop. Neighbors notice the maid's disappearance, who was very popular in the entire region because of her helpful and cheerful nature. The police investigate, but quickly conclude that Marie has gone to America head over heels. The main reason for this assumption are receipts that Dr. Winter presents, which are supposed to prove that Marie had earned enough money for such a trip. Thus, Marie Katharina is officially considered lost on the long way to New Orleans. Marie's aunt, however, is not satisfied with this explanation and assigns you to clarify the fate of the girl.
