The Deserter

Autumn 1944 Germany is at war. As a last defensive measure, six million men aged 16 to 60 are mobilized as part of the "Volkssturm." They are meant to achieve what the Wehrmacht could not — stop the Allies and thus avert the collapse of Nazi Germany. One of these young men is Arno Winkler. He is conscripted against his will and separated from his great love, Frieda Schmidt. He has no experience and abhors the war. After a formative incident, he decides to desert. His goal is to find Frieda and start a family with her. To do so he must flee through the night undetected, avoiding both the enemy and his own comrades.
